The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. (Psalm 16:6)
David experienced great loss in his life. He witnessed the loss of serving in the king’s court where his former boss hurled a spear at him. He experienced a loss of home and separation from his family as he was forced to hide in a foreign land. When he became king, he lost his kingdom for a time (from his own’s son’s rebellion!) and eventually lost his son. Yet, David knew that God had an inheritance for him that could not be taken away.
As the world experiences great loss of lives, relationships, jobs and stability, followers of Jesus know they cannot lost their inheritance. Like a good caring father, God has secured riches for His people. Not money, but the ultimate treasure, God Himself (v5). We can look forward then to being with Him where there is “fullness of joy” and “pleasures forevermore.” Let these truths lead us to treasure Jesus more today.
