READ PSALM 21

For you make him blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence. (Psalm 21:6)

David writes about the king who God protects. But also a king who experiences deep joy in God’s presence. Although David himself was a man after God’s heart, he seems to be pointing to a future king, who God promised would rule forever and is blessed forever. He is King Jesus. While on earth, the Gospel writers describe the deep joy of Jesus and the Father. At His baptism, the Father declared His pleasure in His Son. The writer of Hebrews describes the joy of Jesus even in suffering because He would soon return to the Father (Hebrews 12:2)

The good news is God invites us into this feast of joy. John Piper defines joy as “a good feeling in the soul, produced by the Holy Spirit, as he causes us to see the beauty of Christ in the word and in the world.” Jesus wants His followers to experience His unshakeable joy to the full (John 15:11), no matter what circumstances you are facing.
