O grant us help against the foe, for vain is the help of man! (Psalm 60:11)

Life as we know it seems to be entering another phase of change. As businesses, activities and public venues slowly continue to open more and more, the instinct of many will be to pull themselves up “from their bootstraps” and bring life back to some new normal. As restrictions continue to lift, the temptation may be to grow more self-reliant, rather than Spirit-dependent.

This psalm reminds us that the help from man (which includes our own self-help) is ultimately in vain. Yes, God uses humans and institutions to sustain His world, but these things are not the savior in and of themselves. As the world and our island continues to face the challenges of COVID-19 and its effects, let us remain prayerfully dependent on the help of God in the ups and downs in life. Go to Him in prayer acknowledging your need for Him today and thanking Him for His faithfulness in your life.
