May people be blessed in him, all nations call him blessed! (Psalm 72:17)
Solomon, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, looked forward to a day that a king would come who is deserving of all nations and people to serve Him. Although this appeared a request for Solomon himself at times, ultimately this psalm describes the king who would come from the line of Solomon to do what is right and defend the poor and crush the oppressor (v1-4).
This king is Jesus. He came to earth the first time to deal with the penalty of sin and the punishment of death by dying on the cross for our sins and rising again to give us new life. That’s only part of the Good News. Jesus will return and do away with all oppression and abuse (v13-14). The sin we struggle against will be finally removed. And we can truly say, “Your Kingdom come” as the whole earth is filled with His glory (v19). It is this hope that fuels our desires and actions towards justice now, knowing that although justice is not fully realized in our country and the world now, Jesus will execute complete justice upon His Second Coming. Live today looking forward to His reign, and join in on His mission to share the love and gospel of Jesus to those in your lives.
