Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he! (Psalm 99:2)
When we encounter God’s holiness it leads us to stand in worshipful awe of who He is (v3). When we say God is holy in who He is and what He does, we mean that He is incomparable in who He is and what He has done. There is no one or no thing that can be put in the same category as Him. In this psalm, God’s authority (v1), justice (v4), righteousness (v4), mercy (v8) and judgments (v8) are unlike anything humans are and can practice. This truth is beyond our ability to fully wrap our minds around, and more than our words can even describe.
Yet, although God is unlike us, He chose to associate with us by coming from heaven to earth to live among an unholy people. He died on the cross to make us holy, not to be God but to be made more like Him in His love. In response to His holiness, let us worship God today in all that we do!
