For their sake he remembered his covenant, and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love. (Psalm 106:45)
The author of this psalm recalls the history of God’s people. Despite God’s consistent care and provision for His people, they continue to practice evil and worship other gods (v5). Over and over again the pattern of the people’s rebellion against God, and God’s merciful acts of saving His people are repeated throughout Israel’s history. In a typical human to human relationship, we would expect after so many repeated offenses for God to move on from His people, yet’s God’s love is unlike our love.
God’s commitment to His people is seen in the covenants He makes. God promised Abraham that He would bless His people, and through them the Savior would come. In the New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34), God promises an inward change in His people because they are unable to obey and honor God on their own efforts. God’s commitment to His people is certain. No matter how shaky your faith is today or how far you feel from God tomorrow, His commitment to you is not shaky, and He will never forsake you. Thank God today for His steadfast love!
