I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD, (Psalm 116:13)
Have you ever felt a great deal of gratitude towards someone that you could never pay them back? Maybe they stayed with you in the hospital during a time of sickness, or they helped out of a financial or relational crisis. Or maybe they literally saved your life. There is a sense of being in debt to them for the rest of you life.
When it comes to God, there is no way we could ever repay Him for His saving grace. There is nothing He needs from us, and there is nothing we can give Him that is ultimately not His. So when the psalmist is rescued from death (v3-6), instead of offering to pay God back, which he could not, he lifted up the cup of salvation. This means that the psalmist showed his gratitude to God by continuing to drink in God’s unearned blessings while looking to God in times of trouble. In other words, the response to God’s grace in our lives is to continue to receive and enjoy God’s grace, and that brings Him honor. So lift up the cup of salvation today and continue to rest in the riches that you have in Jesus. Live empowered by this grace as you make Him known to others you see today.
